DINER IN THE STORMFIELD GUIDE

A field guide to the CrazyGames build

Ethan, the man who saw the sky

The diner's only plot hook comes out of a man at a booth, and it only comes out if you ask. Three reply bars decide whether Ethan tells you what he saw.

The exchange

Ethan and Edith share the booth in the middle of the diner. Click Edith and you get her weather complaint; click Ethan and you get the story.

#plateline
1Ethan"Hey man, did you see anything freaky in the skies on the way here?"
2Edith"Ugh, this again."
3Ethan"No really, we saw something huge and like, flickery right before the storm started. Well, I saw it anyways."
4Ethan"Looked kind of like an eye, or maybe a flying saucer!"
5Edith"Ethan's been talking about it nonstop."
6Ethan"I think there was a free seat… somewhere over there?"
7Ethan"(Ethan gestures everywhere haphazardly)"

Line 4 only prints if you pick the first of the three reply bars (see below). The order in the table is the order we walked it; the plate has the choice printed over line 3.

The three replies

After line 3 the client prints three grey bars above the dialogue box:

We took the first. It produces line 4 — the only description of the object anywhere in the diner: an eye, or a flying saucer. We have not walked the other two, so whether they also produce it, and whether the third one's gun joke changes anything, is untested.

The bracketed line

Line 7 is not spoken: it is a stage direction, printed in parentheses inside the same dialogue box, on its own line after the spoken one. It is the only place in the build where the client describes a gesture instead of a sentence, and it is the answer to the Goal: Find an empty seat line the game opens with — Ethan points at the whole room and is no help at all.

We have only seen this bracketed form on Ethan; no other character's dialogue prints one.

Why this matters for the rest of the night

Everything outside the diner is described second-hand, and Ethan is the only person who describes it at all: the television calls it weather, Edith calls it rain, Maggie calls it a storm, and Ethan calls it an eye. The portal's own how-to-play text picks the same thread out and says the right question "might nudge Ethan to reveal something eerie" — which is what happened.
